12 political party supporters killed in bus crash on R34, KZN

Twelve supporters of an unnamed political party have died in a head-on collision between a truck and a bus on the R34 in Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal. 

The horrific accident happened just after midnight on Tuesday, 17 June. 

BUS AND TRUCK CRASH ON R34 VRYHEID CLAIMS 12 LIVES

KwaZulu-Natal Human Settlements and Transport spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said based on the report from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), after the head-on collision, the truck struck the side of the bus.

Sadly, a total of 12 passengers died and were taken to Vryheid mortuary, while ten passengers were seriously injured and were transported to various local hospitals.

Moreover, 22 passengers were slightly injured, six passengers were not injured and the truck and bus drivers survived and were also taken to hospital. 

Sibiya said the road had to be closed to enable emergency services to provide quality care to the surviving passengers.

“We have agreed with the RTI team that we will work with the Road Traffic Management Corporation and the South African Police Service as part of a comprehensive investigation,” he said. 

THE BUS WAS CARRYING POLITICAL PARTY SUPPORTERS

Sibiya said they are establishing facts around reports that the bus involved in the collision on R34 was transporting supporters of a political party.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party held Youth Day commemorations on Monday, in Umlazi and Claremont respectively.
