The City of Tshwane has announced two planned water supply interruptions in Atteridgeville as technicians carry out pipeline upgrades and fittings to improve service delivery.
On Wednesday, 11 June, city technicians will begin upgrading a 75 mm uPVC pipeline to a larger 200 mm uPVC line. This project, which spans 56 metres and will take place between 8:00 and 16:00, runs from the tee along Masopha and Hlakola streets to Maseremule Street.
According to city officials, this upgrade is critical to improving water pressure and reliability in the area. “These upgrades are anticipated to bring… improved pressure regulation, which helps prevent pipe bursts and water loss,” the City of Tshwane said in a statement.
Second water interruption scheduled for 18 June
A second phase of the project is scheduled for Wednesday, 18 June, at the Atteridgeville Taxi Rank on the corner of Maunde and Schurveberg streets. Technicians will install 150 mm PVR pipe fittings, which are also expected to take eight hours from 8:00 until 16:00. Water interruptions will affect residents in Atteridgeville Extensions 17 and 18.
While the city acknowledges the inconvenience to residents, it stresses the long-term benefits. These include an “extended lifespan of infrastructure” and “enhanced water supply management, especially during high-demand periods.”
Moreover, the city assures residents that every effort will be made to complete the work within the allocated time.
Call for water-saving measures
Tshwane has urged residents to adopt everyday water conservation habits in its broader water management efforts. These include avoiding using hosepipes or sprinklers to water gardens between 6:00 and 18:00, refraining from washing vehicles with hosepipes, and not filling swimming pools during the peak period.
The city said that “increased system efficiency to ensure stable and consistent water supply” is a primary objective behind these efforts.
Tshwane apologised for any inconvenience the water interruptions may cause and thanked residents for their patience.
Do you believe the City of Tshwane is doing enough to communicate and prepare residents for these water interruptions?
