Orlando Pirates are edging closer to a sensational reunion with former coach Rulani Mokwena, with talks reaching an advanced stage ahead of the club’s pre-season tour in Spain. Following Jose Riveiro’s departure, the Soweto giants moved quickly to open negotiations with Mokwena for the vacant head coach position.
Pirates new technical team still unresolved
Although both parties are eager to conclude the deal, one significant sticking point remains. Mokwena’s technical team.
A source close to the talks confirmed. “Negotiations between Mokwena and Pirates are in advanced stages, with the 37-year-old ready to take the head coach job, but finer details remain the issue with his technical team still being discussed.”
Mokwena, known for his structured approach and preference to build a trusted backroom staff, insists on bringing his own technical team, just as he did at Mamelodi Sundowns and Wydad AC. He has already approached Michael Loftman to join him as assistant coach.
Ncikazi set to stay as talks progress
While Loftman is expected to join, Mandla Ncikazi is likely to retain his position within the technical team. Mokwena’s return would mark his second stint at Pirates, having served as assistant and caretaker coach between 2017 and 2019 before a brief spell at Chippa United.
Race against time before pre-season
The clock is ticking for the Buccaneers. With the squad due to report for medicals next week and depart for Spain in early July, the club is pushing to finalise Mokwena’s appointment. Pirates know time is of the essence if they want their new head coach to shape pre-season preparations from the outset.
