Orange Level 9 rain warning for parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued Orange Level 9 warnings for parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, as persistent rainfall is expected to threaten widespread flooding from Sunday into Monday.

Authorities say the risk remains high after days of sustained downpours that have already saturated catchment areas and raised river levels across affected municipalities.

Orange Level 9 warning escalates risk

SAWS issued an Orange Level 9 warning for rain expected to trigger extensive flooding over the eastern areas of Mopani District Municipality in Limpopo, as well as Bushbuckridge and Collins Chabane local municipalities.

Furthermore, the service cautioned that the warning follows “a large amount of rain” already recorded in the province, increasing the likelihood of runoff, overflowing rivers, and compromised infrastructure.

The forecast indicates that the heaviest rainfall could overwhelm stormwater systems and low-lying settlements, particularly where soil saturation limits absorption. Emergency services remain on standby as authorities monitor rivers, dams, and bridges that may become unsafe under continued pressure.

Communities urged to remain alert

In Mpumalanga, the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs called on residents to take the warnings seriously as heavy rains continue to affect large parts of the province.

Officials warned that flash flooding could occur with little notice, particularly during heavy overnight rain. They advised residents to secure belongings, avoid unnecessary travel during peak rain, and heed instructions from local disaster management teams.

Safety advice for motorists and residents

Authorities placed particular emphasis on road safety as waterlogged routes and flooded crossings present a significant hazard. Motorists received a clear directive “not to cross flooded roads,” as water depth and current strength can change rapidly.

Communities were also advised to avoid outdoor activities near water sources during the warning period.
