Red Level 10 flood warning issued for Mpumalanga and Limpopo

A Red Level 10 warning has been issued for parts of Mpumalanga and Limpopo, with heavy rain expected to persist for the next two days as a tropical weather system continues to affect the region. Authorities warn that the situation poses a serious threat to lives, infrastructure and livelihoods, particularly in areas already saturated by earlier rains.

Weather models indicate that an additional 100 to 200 millimetres of rain could accumulate over the eastern parts of both provinces. Rivers and dams are already overflowing, increasing the likelihood of severe and widespread flooding.

Rainfall intensifies flood risk

Disaster management officials say the Red Level 10 expected rain will significantly worsen conditions on the ground. Also, saturated soil has reduced absorption capacity, raising the risk of flash floods and prolonged inundation.

Furthermore, communities near rivers, low-lying settlements and floodplains face the greatest danger. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid flooded roads, and heed evacuation notices.

The warning highlights the potential for widespread flooding of roads and settlements, with transport routes expected to be severely affected. Major roads and bridges could sustain severe damage or be washed away.

Communities face severe impacts

Officials warn that the flooding could cut off large communities for prolonged periods, limiting access to emergency services, food supplies and healthcare. The risk to life remains high, particularly where homes are built in vulnerable areas.

Additionally, the anticipated impacts include widespread displacement, damage to property and buildings, and the loss of livelihoods and livestock.

Emergency services remain on high alert, while provincial disaster management centres continue to coordinate response efforts with municipalities and national authorities.

President visits flood-hit Limpopo

President Cyril Ramaphosa visited flood-stricken areas of Limpopo on Thursday, 15 January, to assess the damage and evaluate the government’s response.

“The President’s thoughts are with families who have lost loved ones, people who have been injured and individuals, businesses and organisations who have lost property,” said The Presidency.

The government has said that relief efforts will continue, with a focus on rescue operations, humanitarian assistance and restoring access to affected areas once conditions allow.
