Lesufi, Chiloane visit scene after Vanderbijlpark scholar transport crash claims kills 11 pupils

At least 11 school pupils lost their lives in a tragic accident involving a scholar transport vehicle in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng, on Monday, 19 January 2026.

Preliminary information from officials at the scene, including Gauteng Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the province’s forensic pathology service, indicate that the accident occurred on the R553 behind ArcelorMittal.

A minibus transporting pupils collided with a side tipper truck, resulting in multiple fatalities.

Five people who sustained injuries were transported to Sebokeng Hospital for urgent medical care, while two others were taken to Kopanong Hospital.

Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness Nomantu Nkomo Ralehoko confirmed that the driver of the minibus was one of the survivors.

The South African Police Service (Saps) has since launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and Education MEC Matome Chiloane visited the scene to assess the situation and provide support to those affected.

The accident occurred as the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) was holding a media briefing.

The Chapter 9 institution was releasing its final inquiry report on scholar transport.
