Kaizer Chiefs to snap up Portugal-based defender in R4.5m deal

Kaizer Chiefs have taken a major step forward in bolstering their defence by reaching an agreement with Portugal-based left-back Nkanyiso Shinga. The Soweto giants have tracked the FC Alverca defender for months, and the move now looks all but finalised.

Shinga’s Euro pedigree key to deal

As first revealed by The South African, Chiefs identified Shinga’s five-year stint in Portugal as a key asset in their pursuit of continental success.

“Chiefs are going to pay a transfer fee of around R4.5 million which is believed to be very fair considering that his club just got promoted in Portugal and considering his age as well,” the source confirmed.

“Shinga has been offered a three-year contract and apparently all the personal terms are believed to have been agreed upon and the player is happy to leave Portugal and join Amakhosi.”

Club sources see Shinga as a better option than their current left-backs due to his international experience, which they hope will be crucial in their CAF Confederation Cup campaign.

Full contract details revealed

Another source close to the deal disclosed that the contract includes an option for a further year. Potentially keeping the 26-year-old at Naturena until June 2029.

“Yes, it’s a three-year contract but it has a one-year option on it. That means he could stay at the club until June 2029,” the insider said.

“You know Thabo Cele is believed to also have played a part in convincing Nkanyiso (Shinga) to come. And join Chiefs as they know each other from KZN even before they left for Portugal.”

Chiefs announcements before Dutch pre-season tour

Shinga has already arrived in South Africa and is one of the new signings Chiefs plan to unveil before heading to the Netherlands for their pre-season training camp.

This signing forms part of a broader squad rebuild at Naturena. As the club looks to compete more seriously on both domestic and continental fronts in the 2025/2026 season.
