Gauteng kicked off the week with freezing conditions, as Johannesburg and surrounding cities reported some of the lowest morning temperatures this winter. According to SABC meteorologist Joel Guy, Johannesburg started at a bone-chilling 2°C, with Pretoria and Mafikeng registering just 3°C and 2°C, respectively.
Cloudy skies and chilly mornings
Guy confirmed that “it was pretty chilly in Gauteng this morning, especially in Johannesburg and Mafikeng, both starting at just 2 degrees.”
He noted that similar icy temperatures were recorded in the interior regions, although the skies were expected to clear as the day progressed.
While the mornings remain cold, daytime temperatures in the province are forecast to rise slightly.
“Johannesburg will peak at 18 degrees, Springs at 19, and Pretoria and Mafikeng should reach around 19 as well,” said Guy.
Drizzle elsewhere, but Gauteng remains dry
Although parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga experienced light rain and drizzle early in the day, Gauteng remained largely dry. Guy noted that “it is currently partly cloudy to cloudy in most parts, but Gauteng will remain dry with no significant rainfall expected.”
Fresh north-easterly winds are expected to persist along the eastern coastline, but Gauteng will experience calmer conditions by comparison.
Cooler trend continues
Despite the modest afternoon warm temperatures, the province remains firmly in the grip of winter. Guy warned that “the afternoons might feel slightly warmer compared to the past few days, but the cold mornings are set to continue for some time.”
Do you think the province will brace for even colder conditions, or is a warm front finally on the way?
