Heavy rain and flood alert for parts of KZN

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for parts of KwaZulu-Natal as cold and wet weather approaches the province this weekend.

Forecaster Sihle Dlamini confirmed that the heavy rain could lead to localised flooding, especially in informal settlements and low-lying areas.

“The areas that are covered by this warning include eThekwini, KwaDukuza, Mandeni, Maphumulo, Ndwedwe, Ray Nkonyeni, Umlazi, as well as Umzumbe,” said Dlamini.

SAWS warns of slippery roads, difficult driving conditions, and potential damage to mud-built homes in the affected regions.

Weather: Cold front brings drop in temperatures

Saturday will mark the arrival of a cold front moving through the province. According to Dlamini, temperatures are expected to fall rapidly behind the system.

“Usually when a cold front passes, just behind it, that’s where you’re going to find cold temperatures,” he explained.

“In this case, we’re going to be falling behind the cold front. That is why you’ll encounter cold conditions.”

This sudden dip will be felt across the province, with most areas experiencing a significant chill after the front’s passage. Heavy rain and lower temperatures are expected to make outdoor activities uncomfortable, especially along the South Coast.

Showers are likely across most areas

Rain chances remain high throughout the weekend, with varying intensities forecasted across the region.

Dlamini noted, “A 30% chance of showers is expected across most areas of KZN,” while the South Coast faces a 60% likelihood of rain.

Motorists are urged to avoid flooded roads and reduce speed on slippery surfaces. Emergency services may be on standby to respond to weather-related incidents.
