Weather alert: SAWS warns heavy rain to lash KwaZulu-Natal

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a weather warning for heavy rain expected along the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday, 20 July, cautioning that the persistent downpour could result in localised flooding.

In a statement released on Friday, SAWS said rainfall amounts between 30mm and 50mm are expected along the coastal belt and surrounding areas, with scattered showers likely to affect southern KwaZulu-Natal more heavily than inland regions.

“Isolated showers and rain are expected but scattered along the south coast and southern parts of KZN tomorrow. The persistence of rainfall over those areas may lead to localised flooding,” the warning read.

Risk to infrastructure and motorists

The weather service said the rain may impact formal and informal settlements, particularly in low-lying areas, and may lead to:

  • Flooded roads and bridges
  • Difficult driving conditions, especially on dirt roads
  • Reduced visibility on highways and local roads
  • Structural damage to mud-built homes

Drivers are advised to exercise extreme caution, avoid flooded areas, and remain alert to emergency instructions.

Weekend forecast

For the weekend ahead, SAWS predicts:

  • Partly cloudy skies in the east
  • Isolated to scattered showers continuing in parts of KZN
  • Cool to cold temperatures in the interior
  • Damaging waves along the west and south coasts

Residents are urged to monitor updates and alerts issued by SAWS and local disaster management teams, particularly in flood-prone regions.
