Rain and thunder showers are expected in Gauteng this afternoon

Gauteng residents can expect afternoon and evening thunder showers on Saturday. According to weather forecaster Joel Guy, the eastern provinces will see renewed rainfall activity this weekend.

“Saturday we are going to once again see some afternoon and evening thunder showers across the eastern provinces,” said Guy.

While Johannesburg will enjoy mostly sunny conditions early in the day, isolated thunder showers could develop later in the afternoon.

The mercury is forecast to peak at around 21°C in Johannesburg and 22°C in Pretoria. The chilly morning conditions, however, will persist, with parts of the interior starting the day near freezing.

Eastern Cape and interior remain cold, mirroring Gauteng’s cold morning

The weather pattern across the interior regions of the country, including parts of the Eastern Cape, mirrors Gauteng’s cold morning.

Temperatures in Bethlehem also hovered around freezing, while areas like Mthatha and Matatiele in the Eastern Cape started the morning at 6°C. Despite the cold start, most of the region will warm slightly by midday before isolated thunder showers move in.

Coastal areas enjoy warmer start

While inland regions shiver, coastal areas are set for milder conditions. Cape Town recorded a morning low of 10°C, while minimums along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline were mid-teens.

“It is going to stay fine for much of the interior, but the eastern areas will become partly cloudy later on with isolated thunder showers,” Guy explained.

Is the return of thunder showers a signal of more unsettled weather?
