A suspected vigilante attack in the community of Nekkies in Knysna has left a 28-year-old man dead and four people in police custody, sparking fresh concerns over rising mob justice in parts of the Western Cape.
The tragic incident unfolded last Friday, when Knysna SAPS responded to a distress call just before 11:00.
Officers arriving at the scene found the victim’s body bearing multiple injuries, and paramedics pronounced him dead shortly thereafter.
Preliminary investigations quickly led police to three men and one woman, all aged between 25 and 39, who were arrested the same day and formally charged with murder.
They are currently being held in custody and are scheduled to appear in the Knysna Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 4 August.
Ongoing Investigation
Police spokespersons confirmed that the arrests followed swift detective work and community cooperation, but stressed that the investigation remains ongoing, with more arrests possible.
Authorities have not yet released the victim’s name, pending official identification and notification of next of kin.

The incident has reignited concerns about vigilantism, which continues to pose challenges for law enforcement in several communities across South Africa.

Police have once again urged the public to report crimes through legal channels and avoid mob justice, warning that such actions can lead to criminal charges and further violence.
