A legal professional is facing the full might of the law after being caught driving at an astonishing 220km/h on the N2 this past weekend – nearly double the speed limit in a 120km/h zone.
The lawyer, who was travelling from Umtata, was one of several drivers arrested by the Park Rynie Road Traffic Inspectorate for reckless speeding across KwaZulu-Natal.
According to the KZN Department of Transport, officers had to pursue and apprehend the motorist after clocking the excessive speed on radar.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, an auditor from Reservoir Hills was arrested for speeding at 177km/h, while a third motorist, clocked at 178km/h, remains in police custody.
Officials Condemn Reckless Driving
Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya praised the swift actions of traffic officers, warning that irresponsible driving not only threatens lives but also deepens social and economic hardship.
“In our interaction with many families or victims of road crashes, we hear stories of job losses, disability, and families being ripped apart,” said Sibiya.
“Reckless drivers are behind a vicious cycle of socio-economic problems and a decline in quality of life for many families.”
Criminal Charges and Ongoing Investigations
All three suspects are expected to face charges related to reckless and negligent driving, with possible criminal prosecution if found guilty.
Transport officials have reaffirmed their commitment to curbing speeding and improving road safety, especially as the province braces for increased holiday traffic later this year.
Motorists are urged to respect speed limits and drive responsibly, or face arrest and prosecution.
