Warm weather expected in Gauteng with fire risks

Gauteng will experience warm conditions tomorrow, 22 August, although motorists are urged to remain cautious due to early morning fog patches. The South African Weather Service has warned of possible runaway veld fires in the province’s northeastern areas.

Clear skies and warm conditions

Forecaster Phemelo Zonke confirmed that most of Gauteng will see clear skies and warm conditions. Johannesburg is expected to reach a maximum of 28°C, with Pretoria peaking at 29°C.

“Warm conditions are forecast across the province, with highs of up to 34°C in Musina,” Zonke said.

Overnight, Johannesburg can expect lows of around 11°C. Despite the chilly start, daytime conditions will remain warm and sunny.

Caution for Drivers During Morning Fog

Motorists travelling early tomorrow morning should exercise caution due to reduced visibility from fog, especially along the eastern escarpment. Zonke urged drivers to remain alert.

“Fog patches are expected to reduce visibility to less than a kilometre in some places, so drivers must maintain safe following distances,” she advised.

Fire Danger in the Northeast

The weather service also raised concerns about high fire danger in Gauteng’s northeast. Zonke warned that strong winds could worsen the risk.

“Runaway veld fires are possible overnight, particularly in the northeastern areas, and residents must avoid open flames,” she cautioned.

Do you think Gauteng residents are adequately prepared for both fire dangers and foggy road conditions this week?
