Springbok player on the brink of being ‘CLUBLESS’ – report

This powerful Springbok player could soon find himself without a club after the Wales Rugby Union has decided to cut down its unions from four clubs to two.

One of the clubs likely to be cut has a Springboks player in their midst.

SPRINGBOK PLAYER FACES UNCERTAIN FUTURE

Springbok hooker Marnus van der Merwe currently plies his trade for the Scarlets.

So, with the WRU deciding to cut two sides, van der Merwe faces an uncertain future.

The two sides set to become defunct have not been decided at the time of publication. Leading reports claim that the four unions – Cardiff Blues, Ospreys, Scarlets and Dragons will battle it out for these two spots.

Furthermore, it is unclear whether Wales will merge unions of release the players as free agents once they decide on their two teams.

VAN DER MERWE ATTENTION TURNS TO BOK CAREER

Ultimately, if the decision is based on recent form, then the Dragons will be axed alongside Scarlets or Cardiff. This is because the Dragons have finished at the bottom end of the United Rugby Championship table every season. They finished last, last season and 15th (out of 16 teams) during the 2023/24 season.

Therefore, Bok hooker, van der Merwe faces an uncertain future at club level.

However, his international career is the polar opposite of his club status. He recently made his Springboks debut against Georgia at Nelspruit.

Finally, van der Merwe has replaced Bongi Mbonambi on the Bok bench in the Bomb Squad. He is set to take on Australia in Newlands on Saturday.
