Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture Gayton McKenzie is once again facing criticism. This follows his announcement of veteran actress Nandi Nyembe’s passing on Saturday evening.
GAYTON MCKENZIE SLAMMED AFTER TRIBUTE TO NANDI NYEMBE
He faced significant backlash on X, with many accusing him of not supporting Nyembe while she was still alive. Nandi Nyembe passed away at the age of 75 after her health deteriorated.
Gayton McKenzie took to X to honour her, calling her a “treasured icon” in a heartfelt message.
“It is with profound sorrow that the Nyembe Family, together with the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, announce the passing of one of South Africa’s most treasured icons of the arts, Mam’ Nandi Nyembe,” he wrote.
X users slammed the minister, accusing him and his department of failing Nandi.
@Kanani_mfundo wrote, “You are way focused on sports than Arts and Culture, our veteran actors don’t have the means to maintain themselves because of the acting jobs are given to untalented people.”
@BeardedPriest1 wrote, “You lied to her.”
@Hasaling commented, “How many more actors will pass on until you step up to regulate the industry which sucks their souls dry for profit.”
@6uhle wrote, “Stay away from her you beasttttt.”
@Kusegamede wrote, “Not long ago she expressed her dire need, did you help her?.”
@classic546 wrote, “Stop being a clout chaser, you failed her.”
MINISTER ACCUSED OF FAILING VETERAN ACTRESS WHILE SHE WAS ALIVE
While McKenzie had helped organise a modest gesture for Nyembe, Sunday World reported he repeatedly failed to provide consistent support during her health struggles.
Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture Gayton McKenzie had pledged to visit veteran actress Nandi Nyembe in Soweto after donating R20,000 from his personal funds to assist her during her health and financial struggles.
But according to the publication, he didn’t honour his promise
