Midrand police have issued a warning to the public to be wary of online sales, following attempts by scammers to dupe people into buying non-existent vehicles, which would harm them instead.
Police arrested five suspects yesterday, 25 August, in Midrand who lured unsuspecting buyers to purchase a fictitious car. Instead, the suspects are robbed and physically harmed when they meet with the ‘sellers’.
The men, aged between 27 and 39 years old, are expected to appear before the Midrand Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, 27 August. They face charges of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and conspiracy to commit armed robbery.
Online sale advertised on Facebook
According to media reports, a victim saw a Facebook post advertising a Polo Vivo up for sale and arranged to meet with the sellers in Midrand, on 4 August. The prospective buyer was instead shot, kidnapped, and robbed.
The victim reported the matter to the Midrand police, who began an investigation.
“As the case was under investigation, police received information about a man who responded to the Facebook advert where the same car was for sale, and the contact number was the same,” said an Arrive Alive statement.
In an attempt to apprehend the suspects, police accompanied the man to meet with the `sellers’ yesterday. The `sellers’, who were driving two vehicles, realised they were being set up. They opened fire at the police before speeding off.
“A high-speed chase and shootout ensued. One of the vehicles driven by the suspects capsized, and five suspects were arrested. Two firearms were found in their possession,” said the statement.
Police have advised the public to be “extra cautious” when purchasing items viewed online. Rather, conduct such meetings and finalise sales near your local police station.
