Explore Cape Town’s Forests in Newlands

Newlands Forest has been described as a “gem” by some and is one of Cape Town’s beloved and biodiverse forests with a rich history.

It covers the eastern slopes of Table Mountain and is home to a wide variety of fauna and flora, and, if you haven’t already experienced them, beautiful, magnificent trees that will leave you in complete awe.

If you’re looking for a breather from the city’s fast pace, immerse yourself in the forest’s majestic scenery and fresh air, which is under a 30-minute drive (traffic-dependent) from the CBD.

Getting to know Newlands Forest

Did you know the Newlands Forest was reportedly one of the migratory routes for the Khoi Khoi people? It was also exploited as a timber forest during the Dutch settler time in the 17th century, when there was an increased demand for wood. This was when Jan van Riebeeck became the first governor of the Cape Colony.

After most of the indigenous trees disappeared, new trees were planted, namely Eucalyptus and Pine, which grew in large numbers for logging purposes. They were reportedly in great demand during the World Wars, too, but over the centuries, the need for wood decreased, and the forest was left to grow again. Here are a few ways you can explore it.

What you can do at Newlands Forest

Or more accurately, what can Newlands Forest do for you? It’s one of Cape Town’s sanctuaries for city goers and visitors alike. When you need a day out, a pick-me-up, or simply a new hiking or running route, the forest welcomes you.

Hiking, running, or walking

There are many routes in Newlands Forest, ranging from easy, moderate and difficult; suited to any fitness level, whether you’re a runner, hiker, or walker. Some of the recommended routes include the Contour Path, which is described as a flatter route and is suitable for families or dog walking. Additionally, according to All Trails, the Short Loop is also family and dog-friendly and ideal for a relaxing stroll.

Other recommended routes include the Newlands Ravine, which is reportedly more challenging and is just over five kilometres, and the more historical Woodcutter’s Trail, which is named after woodcutters who worked in the forest.

Picnic/Braai

If you want to make a day of it, there is reportedly a designated picnic or braai area. Just ensure you bring all the necessities. Otherwise, you can also have a peaceful snack along one of the trails near a stream.

Be sure to check the costs, opening and closing times, and relevant regulations for when you visit, and remember to take ample snacks, jackets, and sunscreen.
