ANCYL retracts ‘tea party’ remark, backs National Dialogue

The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) has formally apologised for dismissing the National Convention as a “tea party” and reaffirmed its support for the ongoing National Dialogue.

At a media briefing in Johannesburg on Wednesday, ANCYL leaders, including Malatji and secretary-general Mntuwoxolo Ngudle, sharply criticised the convention.

They called it a gathering of friends and questioned its legitimacy.

Ngudle also hinted at plans to engage other youth organisations to start a parallel youth-focused dialogue.

ANCYL Clarifies Position

In a statement, the ANCYL described the “tea party” remark as an unfortunate characterisation.

Secretary-General Mntuwoxolo Ngudle said the comment arose from frustration over the exclusion of youth organisations that represent genuine constituencies.

“These formations, with thousands of active members, are well-placed to articulate what needs to be done,” the statement said.

ANCYL States National Dialogue Must Address Key Issues

The ANCYL reaffirmed support for the National Dialogue but criticised the convention for failing to capture the voices of South Africans adequately.

It urged that the dialogue focus on issues affecting the majority, including gender-based violence, crime, migration, education reform, and the full implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI).

The ANCYL said it will work with the preparatory task team and NEDLAC to ensure the National Dialogue becomes inclusive of young people, who form the majority of South Africa’s population.

ANC Welcomes Clarification

The ANC welcomed the ANCYL’s apology and reaffirmed alignment within party structures.

“We note the regrettable reference to the process as a ‘tea party’ and welcome the correction made by the Youth League,” the party said in a statement.

Should youth leagues publicly apologise when their comments undermine party initiatives?
