Kim Kardashian received a prestigious DVF Award in Venice on 28 August, recognising her powerful work in criminal justice reform.
The award, founded by designer Diane von Furstenberg, celebrates women who transform and inspire others. Alongside other honourees, Kardashian was granted R1.9 million for her advocacy efforts.
KIM KARDASHIAN’S WORK
The event took place at the luxurious Palazzo Giustinian Brandolini on Venice’s Grand Canal. Diane von Furstenberg praised Kardashian’s commitment, according to WWD.
“People know so much about Kim, but they don’t see the prison work she does. She does unbelievable, real work.”
To add meaning to the moment, Chris Young, a man whose sentence she helped overturn, presented the award. His freedom symbolises the impact of Kardashian’s relentless campaigning.
Speaking at the event, Kim Kardashian shared her journey. “I discovered the law about seven years ago when I wanted to help someone out of prison for the first time,” she said. “I was naïve about our justice system until I worked closely on cases and saw the reality.”
KIM KARDASHIAN ON THE IMPORTANCE OF HELPING OUT
Her activism began with Alice Johnson’s clemency campaign. This opened her eyes to the challenges within the system. “Justice reform is a new path that I’m still figuring out,” she admitted.
Despite her celebrity status, Kim Kardashian insists her public image has not restricted her advocacy. “I thought I’d have to change how I present myself or dress at the White House. Absolutely not,” she said.
“I want people to see the work I do and relate to the real me. Fight for what you believe in. Be yourself. That’s the key.”
JUSTICE AND PRISON REFORM
Her story resonates globally, including in South Africa, where issues of justice and prison reform remain critical.
Kim Kardashian’s dedication shows that activism can come from unexpected places. Her work challenges perceptions and offers hope that change is possible.
CREATING REAL IMPACT
Diane von Furstenberg summarised it well: “This is not a coincidence. ‘God comes incognito.’ Energy and belief drive the fight against mediocrity and greed, something we all can relate to.”
Kardashian’s recognition reminds us that authenticity and courage create real impact. Her advocacy inspires many who push for justice and fairness.
