South African chef dies on Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island

A 35-year-old South African chef has tragically lost his life in an electric buggy accident on Sir Richard Branson’s exclusive Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands.

The incident occurred following a farewell party held at the island’s famed Great House – once the residence of Sir Richard Branson and his wife.

Lost control of the vehicle

The chef, identified as Sihle Somdaka, had attended the celebration before departing in a motorised buggy just before midnight.

According to reports, Somdaka lost control of the vehicle, resulting in a crash. He sustained a head injury and was found unconscious at the scene.

Emergency responders, including the island’s medic and support from nearby Moskito Island, administered CPR and arranged for his immediate transport by boat to Peebles Hospital on Tortola.

However, despite their efforts, Somdaka was later pronounced dead.

A second individual involved in the crash received non-life-threatening injuries and was treated by medical personnel.

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.

A source close to the situation said staff are cooperating with local authorities, while another insider claimed the tragedy may reflect a broader “culture of excess” on the island.

“They’ve had very many close shaves and near misses over the years,” the source told The Sun, “but this is the first time someone has died. It was only a matter of time, but it should never have happened.”

Sir Richard Branson, who was not on Necker Island at the time of the incident, is said to be “deeply saddened” and has reportedly been in contact with Somdaka’s family and the island’s staff.

“This is, of course, his primary concern,” a spokesperson told the media.

Culinary world

Sihle Somdaka had built a respected career in the culinary world, previously working at high-end establishments such as Opa Doha in Qatar and Razzmatazz in Kuwait.

Since joining the Necker Island team, he often shared glimpses of his work and the island lifestyle on social media, showcasing his passion for his craft and the unique setting in which he worked.

The fatal crash has sent shockwaves through both the hospitality and South African expat communities, who remember Somdaka as a vibrant talent gone too soon.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash and whether safety procedures or other factors played a role.
