The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dr Deon George pledged his commitment to make SANPark’s inclusive conservation vision a reality.
He was the keynote speaker at the inaugural SANPark’s Vision 2040 Indaba taking place in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape from 3-5 September.
Key influencers gathered at the event to establish how inclusive conversation may be rolled out in South Africa. Various thought leaders added their voice on how the initiatives documented in the vision 2040 statement may be implemented.
“SANParks’ Vision 2040 is a clarion call. It is a call for ambition, courage, and collaboration. It is a call to see our parks not just as protected areas, but as living landscapes where people, biodiversity, and culture flourish together,” said George.
“As Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment I pledge my full support. I pledge political will, resources, and advocacy. Together, we will ensure that Vision 2040 is more than a vision. It will be our reality, a reality where South Africa stands as a global leader in integrated, inclusive, and transformative conservation,” he added.
SANParks steps up on delivery of vision
Plans penned in SANParks’ Vision 2040 statement and executed includes the following:
- Fighting illicit wildlife crime: protecting life and livelihoods – rangers are committed to protecting wildlife against poachers, crime networks and traffickers. Sophisticated drone surveillance, new patrol strategies, digitalisation of reporting systems and GPS tracking have come into effect to protect rhinos, lions, abalone or other endangered animals.
- The KISS strategy to uplift natural iconic spaces in South Africa – the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment introduced the Kruger, Kirstenbosch, iSimangaliso Icon Status Strategy or KISS initiative to elevate these natural gems. It is hoped that these natural wonders would lead in conservation, inclusive tourism and ecological protection.
- The Rhino Renaissance Campaign was launched during the G20 Presidency. It’s a convergence of SANParks, the Tracker Academy, communities, NGOs and international stakeholders to combat rhino poaching.
- Kgodumodumo Dinosaur Interpretation Centre was launched at the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. This is a museum with a difference offering education, inclusion and regenerate tourism. Multilingual and braille content, and interactive encounters are available to the public.
- G20 Presidency – South Africa’s participation in the Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group enables the country’s stakeholders to shape the global conservation agenda.
While much has been achieved in accordance to the vision statement, George indicated a need to be vigilant. He said integrated required continuous innovation, strong partnerships, and unyielding commitment.
“The threats we face—climate change, wildlife crime, habitat loss—are complex, interconnected, and urgent. Our response must be equally integrated, coordinated across agencies, borders, and sectors, and anchored in the principles of justice, equity, and inclusivity,” added George.
