Where do Bafana Bafana stand in World Cup qualifying?

Bafana Bafana moved one step closer to automatic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after playing to a 1-1 draw against Nigeria on Tuesday night in a hard-fought battle.

Hugo Broos’ team remain in pole position in Group C, grabbing a huge point against the Super Eagles, although Benin also picked up a win to move to within three points of South Africa in the group.

Nevertheless, South Africa importantly stay top of their group with two games to play, against Zimbabwe (away) and Rwanda (at home).

With only the group winners qualifying automatically, Bafana Bafana know that they hold fate within their own hands, that is as long as FIFA do not dock South Africa three points for fielding the suspended Teboho Mokoena in the 2-0 win over Lesotho in March.

There is no word on the matter from FIFA as yet, and so Bafana Bafana will need to simply put such a nightmare scenario out of their mind, and simply focus on the tasks still at hand against Zimbabwe and Rwanda.
