National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has urged SAPS members to make use of the organisation’s Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) services, available around the clock to officers and their families.
Masemola stressed that SAPS prioritises the mental health and well-being of its members daily.
He encouraged officers to undergo regular health screenings, attend debriefing sessions, and make proactive use of the services offered.
Tragic Mamelodi Incident
His comments follow the hostage crisis in Mamelodi East, where a police constable held his family hostage for more than 15 hours after an alleged family dispute.
The constable fatally shot his nephew, released his 69-year-old mother with the help of SAPS negotiators, and then turned the gun on himself.
Masemola highlighted that:
- Counselling and trauma debriefing are available 24/7 across all provinces.
- An integrated team of psychologists, social workers, chaplains and medical practitioners provide support to officers and their families.
- Proactive programmes such as Choose Life (suicide prevention), depression and bipolar awareness sessions, and multiple stressor workshops are offered regularly.
- Awareness campaigns take place during parades, lectures, and events like Mental Health Month and the 16 Days of Activism campaign.
- Partnerships with medical schemes POLMED and GEMS give officers access to external specialists when needed.
Commissioner’s Appeal
“I encourage all our SAPS members across the country to prioritise their health and mental wellbeing by undergoing health screenings and check-ups regularly, as well as attending debriefing sessions,” said Masemola.
“Early detection of health issues allows timely intervention and better overall well-being. As management, we are here to support you.”
What more can SAPS do to strengthen mental health support for its members and their families after the Mamelodi tragedy?
