BIG trouble forces closure of Johannesburg SASSA office

An important Johannesburg SASSA office is closed till further notice, following the suspension of eight agency officials at that location. The timing of this closure could not be worse for SASSA, with the rollout of mandatory biometric enrolment and stringent income checks.

Nevertheless, the agency has sited ‘operational challenges’ at the Johannesburg SASSA office in question. And says it is necessary as it addresses, “underlying issues affecting the services at the Johannesburg SASSA office.” But there’s more to the story …

The South African Social Security Agency took to social media this week, regarding the Johannesburg SASSA office closure. The agency explained that eight officials were arrested and charged for fraud in the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court. As such, the agency says it reaffirms its commitment to a “zero-tolerance approach for malfeasance.”

Nevertheless, what does this mean for ‘core’ SASSA beneficiaries who need office assistance in Gauteng? As we know, September 2025 is the month agency starts roll-out of mandatory biometric enrolment. Any new applicants, and anyone up for income review, must report directly to a SASSA office.
