Visit the best beaches in Cape Town

If you’re not familiar with Blue Flag, it’s described as an “eco-label”, an internationally recognised certification programme awarded to beaches, marinas, and boats that meet a rigorous set of criteria for sustainable development.

Cape Town has boasted beaches backed by their Blue Flag status for many years now and continues to uphold high standards when it comes to sustainability and safety.

If you’re looking to explore a few pristine beaches in Cape Town, look out for the ones proudly flying their Blue Flags.

Beaches with a purpose

For the recent 2024/2025 season, a reported total of 31 beaches were awarded their Blue Flag status throughout the Western Cape, eight of which are in the City of Cape Town. This makes it the highest number in South Africa. Eight beaches were awarded in the Eastern Cape and nine in KwaZulu-Natal.

The beaches in Cape Town are:

  • Silverstroomstrand
  • Clifton 4th
  • Camps Bay
  • Llandudno
  • Muizenberg
  • Bikini Beach
  • Melkbosstrand
  • Fish Hoek

The Blue Flag award is only valid for a year; after this, applicants must renew, which requires continuous development to maintain high standards for reapplication.

This has been a proud achievement for the City of Cape Town. There have been various initiatives to keep the beaches clean and safe. From lifeguards to seawater quality testing, and more. All have ensured that beachgoers can feel at ease when they visit and enjoy the beach vibes at their leisure.
