Major dagga farm bust in KwaZulu-Natal, one arrested

Police have arrested one person in connection with a dagga operation worth over R30 million at a farm in Camperdown, KwaZulu-Natal.

The Hawks and the Durban Metro Police jointly led an intelligence-driven operation that resulted in the apprehension of the 56-year-old suspect.

Dagga Seizures and Evidence

Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo said police discovered 4,165 cannabis plants.

They also found 70 buckets of processed cannabis and other paraphernalia. The street value of the haul is about R30 million.

Hawks officers also confiscated six firearms and more than 165 live rounds of ammunition.

Police called in Forensic Science Laboratory experts to process the scene.

Charges and Court Appearance

Mhlongo confirmed the suspect will face charges for cultivation and dealing in cannabis, as well as unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

Hawks investigators will conduct ballistic tests on the seized firearms to check their links to other crimes.

The Camperdown Magistrate’s Court will soon hear the suspect’s case.

Police Commendation

KwaZulu-Natal Hawks Provincial Head, Major General Lesetja Senona, praised the officers involved, calling the arrest a “job well done.”

Can intelligence-led operations like this help curb large-scale dagga cultivation in KwaZulu-Natal?
