General Mkhwanazi’s testimony to take centre stage at Madlanga Commission

The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is set to testify before the Madlanga Commission on Wednesday, 17 September 2025.

On 6 July 2025, Mkhwanazi made damning criminal syndicate allegations against high ranking politicians and police officials. Among the implicated police officials were the Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu and Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya.

Mkhwanazi also claimed that the KZN Political Killings Task Team was disbanded after it discovered criminal activities. The allegations involved criminals, business people, politicians and members of the judiciary.

Recently, the task team arrested suspects in connection with the politically motivated murder of Xolani Ndlovu-Ntombela on the weekend.

Postponement of Ad hoc committee hearings

The Parliament Ad Hoc Committee postponed its hearings on Wednesday, pending Mkhwanazi’s full testimony.

The Ad Hoc chairperson and African National Congress (ANC) Member of Parliament (MP), Molapi Lekganyane said the decision was inevitable. He stated that they depend on the same witnesses as the Madlanga Commission.

“We met as the Ad Hoc Committee, we agreed that General Mkhwanazi must be the first witness on our list. At the time we made contact with him, we found that he was already at the commission,”Lekganyane stated.

Evidence leaders, guided by Advocate Norman Arendse, working together with Advocate Maria Mokhoaetsi have been appointed for the Ad Hoc Committee processes.

MK Party’s reaction to the ad hoc committee delay

However, the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK Party) MP, David Skosana blamed the committee for the delay. He said that the Ad Hoc committee should have started before the inception of the judicial committee.

“Our team let us down. As you know that before the start of the Madlanga Commission, we could have started before. They have delayed as well, and we delayed even worse, hence we are finding ourselves in this scenario,” Skosana said.

Skosana criticised the ad hoc committee, stating they disappointed the nation by neglecting evidence from Mkhwanazi. He praised Mkhwanazi for exposing criminal activities within the South African Police Services (SAPS) and the judiciary.

Mkhwanazi’s jam-packed schedule

The MK Party MP argued that Mkhwanazi can not divide his attention, as he is also expected to meet the Public Protector’s deadlines. Skosana criticised the judicial commission, stating it holds the country at ransom and noted that the Ad Hoc committee’s findings won’t be binding.

Addressing members of parliament on Wednesday, Adv Arendse confirmed that Mkhwanazi will only be available for appearance after 22 September 2025.
