Nature lovers, mark your calendars: SANParks National Parks Week is back, offering free access to most of South Africa’s national parks. From 21–28 September 2025 (with some parks open on slightly different dates), locals can experience the country’s most iconic landscapes and wildlife without paying an entry fee.
This annual campaign from SANParks gives South Africans a chance to reconnect with their natural heritage, whether it’s spotting elephants in the bush, hiking through dramatic mountains, or standing at the tip of the continent.
With more than 20 parks participating, it can be tough to choose where to go. To help you plan, here are five parks you can’t miss during Free Week 2025:
1. Kruger National Park (22–26 September)

The crown jewel of South Africa’s wilderness. Even with just a day pass, you might spot the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. Kruger is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, and free week is your chance to see it for mahala!
2. Table Mountain National Park (22–28 September)

Cape Town’s natural icon stretches from Signal Hill to Cape Point. Free entry means you can hike, picnic, or simply soak in world-class views. Note: Boulders Penguin Colony and the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway are not included.
3. Addo Elephant National Park (22–27 September)

Eastern Cape’s pride and home to over 600 elephants. It’s one of the best places to see herds in their natural habitat, along with buffalo, lions, and even whales at the park’s coastal section.
4. Golden Gate Highlands National Park (20–28 September)

Known for its golden-hued sandstone cliffs, this SANParks Free State gem is a hiker’s dream. With rolling grasslands, mountain trails, and crisp highveld air, it’s the perfect escape. Bonus: the park’s free week launches early on 21 September.
5. Augrabies Falls National Park (22–26 September)

Nicknamed “the place of great noise,” this Northern Cape wonder showcases the mighty Orange River thundering 56 meters down into a granite gorge. The falls are spectacular after winter rains and a must-see if you’re nearby.
