UPDATE | Charlie Kirk shooter gets his day in court

The man accused of assassinating conservative political activist Charlie Kirk is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, but investigators say they remain no closer to establishing a clear motive behind the fatal shooting.

Tyler Robinson, the alleged gunman, has reportedly refused to cooperate with law enforcement since his arrest.

According to Utah Governor Spencer Cox, early indications suggest Robinson was “radicalised in the dark corners of the internet,” and held left-leaning political beliefs.

“We’re dealing with someone who was clearly influenced by dangerous rhetoric online,” said Governor Cox during a press briefing on Sunday.

Robinson’s transgender partner is cooperating with authorities and, according to Cox, had “no idea this was happening.”

Investigators have not confirmed whether the suspect’s relationship or their partner’s identity had any bearing on the attack.

Ongoing Investigation, Mounting Questions

The FBI and local law enforcement are continuing to comb through Robinson’s digital history and personal associations in an effort to reconstruct a timeline leading up to the 10 September shooting, which occurred during a packed speaking event at Utah Valley University.

Robinson is accused of opening fire from a rooftop near the event, fatally shooting Kirk as he answered a question from the audience.

Kirk, 31, was known for his high-profile campus debates and as the founder of Turning Point USA.

So far, authorities have not announced any official charges, but Robinson is expected to be formally indicted during his first court appearance.

Public Mourning and Political Fallout

A candlelight vigil held on Sunday at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. drew hundreds of Kirk’s supporters and conservative leaders.

Among those who addressed the crowd was former congresswoman and current intelligence director Tulsi Gabbard, who compared the attack to 9/11, warning of rising domestic extremism.

Republican firebrand Kari Lake also spoke at the event, blaming “leftist brainwashing” for Robinson’s radicalisation, claiming it may have stemmed from his brief time in college.

“This is what happens when our universities stop educating and start indoctrinating,” Lake said.

Federal Pressure Builds

The shooting has also sparked scrutiny of the FBI’s response, with FBI Director Kash Patel facing criticism over the speed and transparency of the investigation.

President Donald Trump voiced his support for Patel over the weekend but acknowledged that Congress would be seeking answers.

Patel is expected to be summoned to Capitol Hill later this week to testify before a joint committee reviewing the case, as pressure mounts for a fuller explanation of how the attack was planned and executed.

“Americans deserve to know how this could happen at a peaceful, public event,” said House Judiciary Chair Rep. Madison Cawthorn.

The shooting has sent shockwaves through the U.S. political landscape, raising urgent questions about political violence, online radicalisation, and security at public events.

As the suspect heads to court, many are watching closely – not just for justice, but for insight into what drove the killing of one of America’s most outspoken conservative voices.

Where does the problem here lie: US schools, FBI, Donald Trump?
