Rugby legends suggest referees should ‘answer’ for performances

When reviewing the performances of referees during the current ongoing Rugby Championship, it’s become evident once again just how difficult it is to find consistency when it comes to officiating.

Yes, there are cases of simple human error, but it also can’t be discounted just how so many complex and complicated rugby laws seem to make refereeing something of a gamble at times.

In round three of the Rugby Championship, English referee Karl Dickson came under fire from many Springbok fans after a frustrating loss at Eden Park, particularly as the decision-making at the breakdown was marred with inconsistency.

There was also a widespread backlash this past weekend when referee Christophe Ridley and TMO Glenn Newman missed a ridiculously clear and obvious forward pass in the lead up to a late Australia try, which enabled the Wallabies to collect two crucial losing bonus points.

It sparked an interesting response from former Wallabies great Quade Cooper, who suggested that referees “should have to do press conference after games like players and coaches”.

This idea was endorsed by All Blacks legend Sonny Bill Williams, who suggested on social media that he agreed 100%.
