Groote Schuur Hospital opens high-tech chemotherapy room

The Oncology Department at Groote Schuur Hospital has officially opened its newly upgraded outpatient chemotherapy room and modernised pharmacy facilities, in a move set to significantly improve care for thousands of cancer patients across the Western Cape.

Catering to around 3 000 new patients annually, the upgraded facility aims to reduce overcrowding, enhance patient comfort, and ensure the safe preparation of chemotherapy medications.

The R5.2 million project was made possible through collaborative funding from government departments, civil society, the Groote Schuur Trust, and donors.

‘One goal in mind’

“This project is a shining example of what can be achieved when government, civil society, donors, and healthcare professionals work together with one goal in mind: to offer patients hope,” said Western Cape Health and Wellness MEC, Mireille Wenger.

“Together, we have not just built a room. We have created a space of care, comfort, and compassion that will serve thousands of patients for years to come.”

‘Generosity’

Groote Schuur Hospital CEO, Dr Shaheem de Vries, thanked all those who made the project possible.

“Their generosity ensures that we can provide safe, dignified, and high-quality care to patients who need it most,” he said.

“These contributions do not just build facilities – they open doors of hope and possibility for thousands of families across the Western Cape.”

The upgraded unit is now fully operational and is expected to significantly improve the cancer treatment experience for both patients and staff.
