Kaizer Chiefs’ African adventure is officially back, and fans across Mzansi won’t miss a moment of it.
With last season’s Nedbank Cup triumph, Amakhosi booked their ticket into this year’s CAF Confederation Cup, formerly the African Cup Winners’ Cup.
Kaizer Chiefs’ campaign begins with a tricky test in the preliminary round against Angolan Cup champions Kabuscorp S.C.P.
KAIZER CHIEFS IN THE CAF CONFEDERATION CUP ON SABC
According to the DStv Guide, SABC 1 has confirmed it will broadcast the first leg live on Saturday at 15:00.
Amakhosi will travel to Luanda’s 11 de Novembro Stadium this weekend before bringing the tie home to FNB Stadium on 27 September.
TOURNAMENT ROADMAP
The CAF Confederation Cup is structured in two phases: qualification and the main event. The early rounds are played in a straight knock-out format with the away goals rule deciding ties.
16 winners from the qualifiers then move into the group stage, where four groups of four battle it out in round-robin fashion.
From there, the top two teams in each group advance to the quarterfinals, followed by two-legged semi-finals and a final showdown.
Kaizer Chiefs’ last African dance was in the 2020/21 CAF Champions League, a fairytale run that ended in heartbreak after a 3-0 defeat to giants Al Ahly in the final.
It was a campaign full of drama, with Gavin Hunt shown the door after steering the Glamour Boys past the quarterfinals, and Arthur Zwane later guiding the side all the way to the showpiece.
Five years on, Kaizer Chiefs are back on the continental stage, this time chasing glory in the Confederation Cup. With SABC 1 bringing the action live to South African homes, fans can expect a fresh chapter of Amakhosi’s African ambition to kick off in style.
