Controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 17 September, for his formal bail hearing.
Magistrate Syta Prinsloo denied bail. Matlala appeared under heavy police guard.
Matlala stands accused of orchestrating the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Tebogo Thobejane, who was killed in 2023. He also faces charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and money laundering.

The state argued that Matlala is a flight risk, with the means to evade justice. He also allegedly used fake identity documents to travel to eSwatini previously.
MADLANGA COMMISSION BEGINS
His court appearance coincided with the opening of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference, and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System, also known as the Madlanga Commission.
KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who is testifying before the commission, has accused Matlala of having close ties with high-ranking officials in the South African Police Service (SAPS). Matlala is accused of colluding with suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.
