The Montana Crossing Shopping Centre in Pretoria North has officially completed a significant redevelopment, introducing a refreshed look, improved accessibility, and a revamped tenant mix designed to enhance the shopping experience for both commuters and local residents.

Located along Sefako Makgatho Drive, Montana Crossing is a large open-air convenience centre boasting over 40 stores.
New tenants
The mall now features a modernised layout and improved access, anchored by several prominent new tenants – most notably Checkers Fresh X, which has replaced Pick n Pay as the primary anchor tenant.
The redevelopment was spearheaded by SA Corporate Real Estate, a JSE-listed Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) with R19.4 billion in assets under management.
In its 2024 annual report and interim financial statements, the company announced the successful completion of the first phase of upgrades to Montana Crossing.
“The group anticipates a 30% uplift in rental income for the 2026 financial year as a result of the redevelopment,” SA Corporate Real Estate stated.
Retail Shake-Up
The transformation includes a more strategic tenant mix, aimed at offering greater value and variety to shoppers.
Among the most notable changes:
- Checkers Fresh X opened in July 2025, featuring a full-service bakery, butcher, wine and cheese selection, and in-store coffee shop
- Checkers Liquor, Checkers Outdoor, and Petshop Science have been added to complement the Fresh X offering
- Roots Butchery, launched earlier this month, has been introduced as a sub-anchor tenant, drawing crowds with its premium meat selection and competitive pricing
- Build It has replaced a previously underperforming independent retailer, further enhancing the centre’s home improvement and DIY retail offering
Other long-standing and new tenants include Clicks, Universal Paints, Debonairs Pizza, Willard Xpress Batteries, Steers, Wimpy, and Fishaways, among others.
Modern Design and Easy Access
The upgraded Montana Crossing now boasts a clean, modern aesthetic with ample parking and direct access from the Sefako Makgatho arterial route, positioning it as a high-traffic convenience hub in Pretoria North.
Shoppers on-site praised the ease of access, improved shopping environment, and the fresh appeal brought by flagship retailers like Checkers Fresh X and Roots Butchery.
