Springboks: FOUR players to be dropped – UPDATE

The Springboks will be releasing four players who will return to their clubs.

The Springboks currently have a squad of 33 players. Meanwhile, Willie Le Roux has joined the side to provide injury cover at fullback. Bringing the Bok training group number up to 34 players.

This will be trimmed down to 30 when Rassie Erasmus names his Bok squad to travel to London.

SPRINGBOKS TO SEND SQUAD OF 30 PLAYERS TO LONDON

The Springboks take on Argentina in the last round of the Rugby Championship at the Allianz Stadium in Twickenham on 4 October 2025.

As previously reported on The South African, Rassie Erasmus will be sending a 30-man squad to London next week.

Currently, 34 players are training with the Boks following the addition of Willie Le Roux. Meaning, FOUR of the players currently training with the Springboks will be sent home.

So, let’s take a look at who could be cut from the current side

BOK QUARTET LIKELY TO BE DROPPED

Trying to predict Rassie’s next move is like trying to predict the weather in Cape Town.

Anything is possible and there is beauty in the chaos. So, nobody knows for sure. However, based on recent selections, we have a good idea who is likely to remain home when the Boks fly to London.

Marnus van der Merwe, Faf de Klerk, Makazole Mapimpi and Willie Le Roux are the Springboks likely to be sent home.

This is because Springboks veteran Bongi Mbonambi has rejoined the squad. He is expected to resume his spot on the Bok bench to provide cover for Malcolm Marx.

Meanwhile, Grant Williams and Cobus Reinach are in top form. So, Faf is unlikely to get game time in two crucial must-win Test matches against Argentina.

Finally, Mapimpi was called up for cover for Kurt-Lee Arendse during the Springboks tour but he was not used. Furthermore, Ethan Hooker had the game of his life against the All Blacks on the wing.

Meaning, Mapimpi will likely return to the Sharks.

*Please note: These predictions are speculative and have not been confirmed.
