Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye has criticised defender Aden McCarthy’s defending following Amakhosi’s back-to-back defeats.
The Glamour Boys started the season on a high, but after six matches, they suffered their first league defeat at the hands of Sekhukhune. Their next match was against Angolan outfit Kabuscorp in the CAF Confederation Cup, which ended in a 1-0 defeat for the Soweto giants.
Khanye, who has been critical of Chiefs since pre-season, said he was not surprised by the club’s recent results. He questioned the centre-back pairing of Miguel Inacio and Aden McCarthy.
“I’m very disappointed in McCarthy, especially his positioning. He is more focused on playing than on his primary job, which is to defend,” Khanye said on iDiski TV.
“Chiefs are playing with two centre-backs; Aiden McCarthy and Miguel, I don’t think they complement each other in terms of defending. Look at the goal Kabuscorp scored, very poor. This boy Aden, was ball watching while there was an attacker behind him.”
Can Kaizer Chiefs bounce back?
Amakhosi are back in action on Wednesday against Marumo Gallants at the FNB Stadium. A win could very well put them back in the title picture, but anything less than that will see the Nedbank Champions five or more points behind log leaders Sekhukhune United.
After Wednesday’s league clash, Chiefs will host Kabuscorp at the FNB Stadium in the second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round. The Soweto giants will need to win 2-0 or more if they are to progress to the next round. Anything less than a win will see them out of the competition in the first stage which will be a disaster for the club.
It remains to be seen if Chiefs will opt for McCarthy at the back with Zitha Kwinika available.
