The Blues were struggling against the in-form League One side but two quickfire goals after half-time from Tyrique George and Facundo Buonanotte put them through.
Meanwhile, last season’s runner-ups Liverpool knocked out Southampton, but Hugo Ekitike was sent off for a second bookable offence after celebrating a late winner with his shirt off.
There are four more games on Wednesday as Arsenal, Man City, Spurs and Newcastle take centre stage.
