KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) faces heightened weather risks as the South African Weather Service warns of severe thunderstorms and disruptive rainfall across the province.
According to forecaster Odirile Modipa, “A yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms is in effect over the central and western parts of KwaZulu-Natal, spreading into the Free State and Mpumalanga.”
Conditions are expected to worsen, and a more serious warning has been issued. “A yellow level 4 alert has been issued for disruptive rainfall across most parts of KwaZulu-Natal,” Modipa confirmed.
KwaZulu-Natal heavy rainfall
Communities along riverbanks and flood-prone zones are advised to remain vigilant as disruptive rainfall could lead to localised flooding. Rural areas with limited drainage may face greater challenges.
The storms coincide with a cold front that has made landfall along the southern coastline, pushing moisture inland. This system is driving the severe conditions across KZN and neighbouring provinces.
Temperatures remain low
Overnight temperatures will remain cold across much of the country, averaging around 10°C in central South Africa. KZN will also experience a chilly night despite the heavy rainfall.
Residents are encouraged to take precautions, avoid unnecessary travel during storm peaks, and secure outdoor items that could be displaced by strong winds.
