LABOUR Mayor Andy Burnham has accused Sir Keir Starmer of lacking a plan as he demanded a massive lurch to the Left.

He set out his stall for mass renationalisation and hit out at the “divisive” Labour Party.

It will be seen as a further attempt to undermine the embattled PM with his own thinly-veiled pitch for the top job.

Mr Burnham sparked fresh speculation he is planning to contest the Labour crown by opening the door to a return to Westminster.

He used an interview in the left-wing New Statesman magazine to call for a “rolling back of the 1980s” by nationalising housing, energy and water companies.

Ahead of the party’s annual get-together in Liverpool, the former Cabinet Minister said: “The issue for the conference is: where is our plan to turn the country around?

“This kind of challenge we’ve got in front of us cannot be met by a very factional and quite divisive running of the Labour Party.”

Allies of Mr Burnham are said to be plotting his path back to Parliament so he can run for leader should Sir Keir be pushed out.

But he first needs a Labour MP to vacate their seat so he could contest a by-election.

And then he must win against a buoyant Reform party.
