Full list of 49 British banks shutting nationwide in yet ANOTHER round of closures – is your local one of them?

ANOTHER 49 bank branches are shutting across the UK next year – leaving millions of customers facing yet more disruption to their local banking.

The latest wave of closures will see Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland branches shut down in towns and cities spreading all the way from Cornwall up to the Scottish Highlands.

Lloyds will shut 26 branches, Halifax 10 and Bank of Scotland 13 between January and October.

It will leave Lloyds Banking Group, which owns all three, with 705 branches – 359 Lloyds, 269 Halifax and just 77 Bank of Scotland.

Staff at affected sites will be offered roles at nearby branches or other parts of the business, Lloyds said.

The move is the latest blow for high street banking.

Since 2015, more than 6,400 branches have shut, an average of 53 every month, according to consumer champion Which?.

Lloyds Banking Group said closures reflect the switch to online and app banking.

A spokesperson said: “The way people are banking has changed, with over 21million customers choosing our apps to manage their money.

“We’re providing more choice than ever before, bringing together the best in digital convenience with our people.

“Alongside our app, our customers can use any Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland branch, the Post Office or Banking Hubs for their everyday banking, and deposit cash at over 30,000 PayPoint locations.”

But critics say rural and older customers are being left behind. Caroline Voaden, MP for South Devon, blasted the closure of the Lloyds branch in Totnes.

“This decision leaves Totnes without a physical bank and is the latest in a string of bank closures in South Devon,” she said.

“Protecting these services is crucial, especially for those who don’t use mobile banking, and I will be working with the Town Council to push for the establishment of a banking hub in Totnes.”

The latest wave comes on top of 11 more branches shutting this week – including NatWest sites in Abingdon, Birmingham, New Market, Willerby and Yate.

Halifax is closing branches in London Clapham Junction, Rhyl, Erdington, Cirencester and Walkden, while Lloyds is axing its Leeds Armley site.

There is some hope for customers, 11 new banking hubs are set to open soon, letting customers from any bank withdraw cash, pay in money and get help with everyday banking.

The new hubs will be in Buxton, Camborne, Chepstow, Deal, Gorseinon, Grangemouth, Harborne, Hawick, Ryde, Stamford and Totton.

What to do if your local bank is set to close

If your local branch is shutting up shop, there are ways you can access banking services without having to venture to another town.

You can use one of the Post Office’s 11,684 branches for basic banking services – although you won’t be able to open new bank accounts or take out personal loans or mortgages.

You can find your nearest Post Office branch by visiting postoffice.co.uk/branch-finder.

Many banks also offer a mobile banking services – portable branches where you can access services like cash deposits, withdrawals and bill payments.

These mobile units visit designated locations up to five days a week, except on Christmas Day and Bank Holidays.

Some banks use buildings such as village halls or libraries to offer mobile banking services.
