Axed reboot of 80s classic set to finally air after being dumped off-screen for two YEARS

AN axed reboot of one of the 80s most popular shows is set to finally air after being dumped from screens for two years.

Hit TV show Challenge Anneka was rebooted for Channel 5 but it quickly became one of the TV channel’s biggest flops with bosses soon shelving the show to avoid more ratings disasters.

The final episode of the series, fronted by title star Anneka Rice, was eventually pulled from airing and has been kept out of public view for two years.

But Channel 5 bosses have now revealed that the final episode will be screened on Sunday 5 October from 10:30pm until 12:00am.

The network has seemingly slotted the show into the schedules before binning it off for good.

A teaser for the final episode has revealed that Anneka and the Challenge team will be helping the Luton Sea and Royal Marine Cadets as they attempt to design a medal for outstanding achievement.

The TV host will also be helping to refurbish its training facilities including all of its overnight accommodation, training boats and equipment.

The reboot was originally screened in 2023 but after the first three episodes proved unsuccessful, the fourth and final edition remained unseen until now.

At the time, a spokesperson for Channel 5 confirmed: “We want to preserve the series to ensure that each episode gets the best audience possible.”

Channel 5’s Chief Content Officer, Ben Frow, also had his say on the programme and hinted that it was a mistake to bring it back.

Speaking previously at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Ben said: “We realised two weeks before we put it out, it’s a make-up show, and they did home renovation shows since then.

“The world changed so much, what Anneka was doing – which was innovative 30 years ago – was [different to] now, and we won’t go there again.”

On Challenge Anneka, Rice was given a two-to-three day deadline for a massive task to help a local community.

The host then had to use her charm to get free labour and donations to complete her mission.

The show first launched in the 80s with bosses originally hoping to capture the magic of the programme from the first time around.

Challenge Anneka will air on Sunday 5th October at 10:30pm on 5.
