I live in the tiniest apartment with a kitchen-shower & have to ‘commute’ to the loo but the view is worth it

PARIS – the city of love, croissants, and turns out, tiny apartments that have taken the internet by storm.

Amongst those living in the cramped spaces is also Matthias Miller who ditched his US life for a new chapter in the French capital.

The TikToker now spends his days in a ”tiny” apartment in Paris – and according to the content creator, there are several features that sent him ”into a state of shock” when he first moved in.

One of these, he recently shared in a video online, is ”a mystery burn mark” – which horrified viewers warned him was a result of the ”electrical heater that is burning up the wallpaper”.

The young man didn’t seem to be too concerned about this, as he said the brown mark added ”to the cosy lived-in character of the apartment”.

According to Matthias, there is also no toilet in his flat – instead, he needs to ”commute” via the hallway in the apartment block.

Showing the cramped loo, the TikToker admitted he wasn’t fond of the situation.

”I literally hated this bathroom concept so much – and to make things better, the door didn’t lock either.”

Whilst the loo is a trek away, Matthias doesn’t need to walk too long for a quick shower – which is very conveniently located in the kitchen.

Posing right next to the unusual kitchen shower setting, the TikToker also joked that the door opening was very tiny too.

”Don’t worry, the Brandy Melville door was also included.

”One of my favourite things is that the room is almost big enough for me to lay completely flat in it – it’s really cosy actually.

”And if I ever needed to get furniture, I don’t need a measure.

”Because if it’s longer than me, it’s probably not gonna fit,” he said in the viral tour.

Meanwhile, as the flat is at the very top of the building, the walls in his bedrooms are slanted – meaning he’s risking to bang his head whenever he wakes up.

Are tiny homes legal in the UK?

TINY houses can be in the UK regardless of whether they are on a trailer base or not. The legality of tiny houses is all to do with where it is and what you use it for.

According to Planning Geek, constructing a granny annexe in your garden usually means you’ll need planning permission, especially if it has a bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen.

This is because it’s seen as a separate living space rather than just an extension of your main home.

However, if you’re thinking about converting an existing outbuilding, like a garage, into a granny annexe or a tiny home, you might not need planning permission.

That said, it’s important to make sure the space doesn’t end up being a fully self-contained unit – for instance, if the converted area doesn’t include cooking facilities, it might not be classified as a separate dwelling.

It’s also worth noting that, while certain small outbuildings can be constructed under permitted development rights, the NAPC points out that this usually applies to structures like sheds or garages, rather than self-contained annexes.

According to The Tiny Housing, a tiny home on wheels must not exceed 2.55 meters in width to be road-legal in the UK. Also, with a standard car licence, the length cannot be more than seven meters.

While tiny homes offer an alternative living solution, they must comply with local planning and building regulations.

Always check with your local council to ensure compliance with all regulations.

”The bed is pretty awesome too. It really reminds you to slow down in life – because if you wake up too fast, you might get a concussion,” he joked.

But despite all the flaws, there’s one thing that makes up for it all – the view of the Eiffel Tower in the distance, albeit obstructed.

‘Are you getting paid to live there?’

Uploaded just four days ago under the username @matthias.miller, the flat tour has already gone viral, winning the TikToker more than 2million views.

As 270k people gave it a like, over 800 flooded to comments – and it seems the ”tiny” living space wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

One viewer said: ”Yeah, I don’t care how cheap the apartment is. I am never renting an apartment with a communal bathroom.”

Another chimed in: ”oh I just know this is an oven in summer.”

”Are you getting paid to live there?” someone else wondered.

”That’s Linguini’s apartment from Ratatouille,” a fourth chuckled.
