The Kruger National Park experienced record-breaking visitor numbers on Heritage Day on Wednesday, 24 September, which coincided with SA National Parks Week, drawing thousands of nature lovers eager to enjoy the park’s iconic wildlife and landscapes.

However, due to capacity limits and safety protocols, many visitors were turned away after daily quotas were reached early in the day.
Multiple reports of ‘three hour-long queues’ and frustrated and angry South Africans – and international tourists – quickly did the rounds on social media.
Park Reaches Full Capacity
In a statement, Kruger National Park management expressed regret that not all guests could be accommodated.
“While we celebrate the public’s enthusiasm, we deeply regret that some visitors had to be turned back.
“We urge all future guests to plan ahead and book before travelling to avoid disappointment,” the statement read.
Free Entry, But Quotas Still Apply
While entry to the park is free for South African citizens during National Parks Week, standard daily quotas remain in place to manage congestion, protect biodiversity, and ensure a quality experience for all.
Free entry at KNP is valid from Monday, 22 September to Friday, 26 September 2025.
However, weekend dates (27-28 September) are excluded from the free access offer.
Booking Strongly Encouraged
South African National Parks (SANParks) is encouraging the public to:
- Use the online booking system at www.sanparks.org
- Call park offices on 012 428 9111 for assistance
- Arrive early at gates, especially during peak holiday periods
“The gate quotas are a necessary tool to ensure both visitor safety and ecological preservation. Your cooperation helps maintain the magic of Kruger for everyone,” SANParks added.
National Parks Week continues to offer an incredible opportunity for locals to reconnect with their natural heritage.
But with popularity rising each year, early planning is essential.
