Asda fined £130,000 for selling out-of-date food in UK stores

SUPERMARKET giant Asda has been fined £130,000 for selling out-of-date food.

The supermarket was slapped with the massive fine after inspectors said they discovered 59 out-of-date items for sale.

Inspectors said there was off ham, cheesecake, crème fraiche and smoked salmon on shelves that should have been thrown away.

Three staff were fired and one resigned over the hygiene blunders at the Huyton branch near Liverpool.

Packets of meat were said to be two days past their use-by date and smoked salmon packs were reportedly being sold despite being four days past their date.

Knowsley Council believed there was a ”fundamental fault” with a date coding system used by Asda.

At Sefton magistrates court, Asda, which reported a £763 million loss last year, was also ordered to pay Knowsley Borough Council costs of £11,014.15 plus a £2,000 surcharge after it admitted six charges of contravening food safety and hygiene regulations.

It has since spent £1.3m rectifying the issue with a new coding system and staff retraining.

In June the company was fined £640,000 for selling out of date from a store in Cardiff and that followed fines of £250,000 and £410,000 for food safety breaches at stores in Derbyshire and in Cornwall, in 2024 and April of this year.
