The Europeans have been greeted with a plethora of boos as they approach the tee boxes around Bethpage Black.

Many eye-opening phrases are shouted in the direction of players during golf tournaments, including the Ryder Cup.

Here we take a look at a rather odd heckle that spectators often call upon…

Why do golf fans shout ‘mashed potatoes’?

A shout you usually associate with golf fans is “get in the hole”, while the ball is travelling after a player’s shot.

But sometimes, spectators say the most random phrases, none more so than “mashed potatoes”.

The heckle was first heard at the 2010 PGA Championship following a Tiger Woods tee shot.

A clip of the shout went viral and it has since become an ever-present at the biggest golf tournaments around the world.

In 2011, American fan Andrew Widmar shouted it after another Woods’ tee shot at the Chevron World Challenge.

The golf fanatic revealed that he shouted it so his mother could spot him in the crowd on TV.

While there is no official reason behind the shout, it has become incredibly popular and is often heard at the biggest competitions.

The players haven’t taken to the cry as well as the fanbase.

At the 2018 Genesis Open, Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy criticised the behaviour of some fans and had one loud-mouthed spectator ejected.

On the incident, Thomas said at the time: “I was like, OK, I’ve had enough.”

The Ryder Cup is BACK as Team Europe defend their crown on American soil this weekend

Luke Donald‘s team are in New York ahead of the big start on Friday, having dominated the prestigious competition in the 21st century – winning eight of the 11 meetings since 2002.

But only two of those wins have come in the United States, with Team USA winning both the 2021 and 2016 competitions.

In fact, Team Europe has only won one of the four Ryder Cups held in the US – 2012 – since their win there in 2004 and Team USA enter this year’s competition as the odds-on bookies’ favourites.
