Counsellor Jack Rimmer, played by actor Jason Merrells, has been axed.

His firing was shown in episode eight of the new series, giving fans a sense of closure to his character.

But Denise Welch made a return to Waterloo Road as Steph Haydock – a role she first played back in the programme’s pilot episode in 2006.

At the end of this week’s episode counsellor Jack was seen attempting to break up a fight in the school hallway.

He was surrounded by chanting children egging on the fight to continue.

While Jack wrestled with attempts to pry the fighting schoolboys away from one another he put his hands over one of the children’s shoulders.

The child then proceeded to bite him to get him to leave them alone.

Jack exclaimed out in pain, shouting: “AHH HE BIT ME!,” while leaping backwards.

The onlookers exchanged a mixture of surprised, shocked, and amused glances.

The scene then cut to one of Darius Donovan (Jon Richardson) speaking to Denise (Steph) about a vacancy problem they needed to address.

This strongly indicates that Jack will be leaving the show after his poor management of the fight.

It also excited fans to see the Loose Women star, 67, return to the series.

She was sporting fresh blonde hair, a green blazer and a serious tone.

“I thought I could trust your judgement Darius, I thought we were a team,” said Steph.

“Right, onto the vacancy problem,” Darius continued.

Fans flocked over to X to share their sadness towards seeing Jack leave.

“Just finished watching the new Waterloo road series and was really annoyed that Jack rimmer only lasted for that long! He was always my favourite out of all the headteachers,” commented one user.

“What an awful and disappointing season for Waterloo Road doing Jack Rimmer so dirty!,” said another.

Fans were also sharing their excitement about Denise’s return.

“STEPH HAYDOCK IS RETURNINGGGGG,” commented one excited viewer.

“Just finished Waterloo Road omg the trailer for next series?!?! Steph Haydock return????? I’m so hyped,” and “STEPH HAYDOCK BACK ON WATERLOO ROAD THIS IS NOT A DRILL,” shared others.

Waterloo Road is available for viewing on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
