SEVEN in ten blokes overestimate the size of their todger, researchers have discovered.
The bedroom braggarts add almost half an inch on average to the length of their manhood when it stands to attention.
Those most well-endowed at rest were more likely to exaggerate their size when erect.
“Growers”, who saw the greatest extension between flaccid and hard, were more likely to underestimate it, the experts found.
A team at Peking University in China asked 342 blokes aged between 18 and 80 to estimate the size of their manhood before doctors measured them up.
They said 73 per cent claimed their member was larger than it was in reality — by 1cm (0.4in) on average — and the average erect size was 12.8cm (5ins).
Dr Kai Hong and Dr Haocheng Lin, who led the study, said between 45 to 68 per cent of men suffer “size anxiety”.
As such, self-reported erectile lengths “significantly exceeded measured values”, they added.
Writing in the journal Sexual Medicine, the duo said size concerns were unwarranted as 85 per cent of women “express satisfaction with their partners”.
They said adolescents often suffer “misconceptions about masculinity” because they use pornography — with its accent on larger members — “as a source of sexual knowledge”.
The NHS says an average adult penis is about six to ten cm (2.5 to 4in) when soft, and 13 to 18cm (5in to 7in) when erect.
