MANCHESTER UNITED fans were left enraged after Brentford’s clever tactic before Bruno Fernandes’ missed penalty.
United had the chance to equalise from the spot after Bryan Mbeumo was fouled by Nathan Collins inside the box on 71 minutes.
A VAR review took place immediately after to check if Collins should have been sent off as it appeared he denied Mbeumo a clear goalscoring chance.
But after a long check, the centre-back was spared a direct red card and referee Craig Pawson to his initial yellow card decision.
A minute after the review was complete, Brentford manager Keith Andrews made two substitutions.
Rico Henry and Keane Lewis-Potter replaced Aaron Hickey and Dango Ouattara respectively.
A total of five minutes had gone by until Fernandes, 31, finally got to hit the penalty.
The Man Utd captain fired a poor effort that saw Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher lunging to his left and saving with ease.
But a number of United fans were left enraged as they insist the long delay between the foul on Mbeumo and the penalty threw Fernandes off.
The Red Devils’ supporters stormed on social media lambasting Pawson’s handling of the situation as they are adamant the Bees’ subs should have come on after the spot-kick.
One fan tweeted: “Brentford making subs while Bruno has been waiting 5 minutes to take a penalty is a fucking joke, shouldn’t be allowed.
Another commented: “Absolute b*******, 4mins from the whistle to it being taken!!
“Give the pen, take the pen, then let VAR and the subs come on afterwards for f*** sake.”
A third wrote: “Poor penalty from Bruno Fernandes, but letting Brentford make subs before the penalty is taken just to make Bruno wait longer is poor from the ref.:
This fan said: “VAR looked at something for three minutes and now Brentford bringing on three subs??? Like what the actual f*** is going on with our beautiful game?”
That one posted: “Why the f*** have Brentford been allowed to make subs there, Five f****** minutes it took to let him take the pen, so f****** corrupt.”
