Five people died in a head-on collision on Friday night along the R518 in Lephalale, Waterberg District.
The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety said a sedan attempted to overtake and crashed into an oncoming vehicle.
Both drivers and three female passengers died at the scene, while paramedics rushed six injured passengers to nearby hospitals.
Authorities suspect reckless driving and are awaiting the outcome of formal investigations.
Condolences from the Limpopo Province
MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, conveyed her sympathy to the bereaved families.
“On behalf of the people of Limpopo, I wish to extend our condolences to the families of those who perished and wish the injured a speedy recovery. These are difficult times, and we are comforted by the fact that our Lord will eventually heal the pain,” she said.
Increased Road Traffic and Crash Safety Concerns
The tragedy occurs during a busy Heritage Day weekend, with increased traffic volumes due to religious gatherings and family activities across the province.
Mathye urged motorists to remain patient and avoid reckless driving to “arrive alive.”
To manage the surge in road travel, traffic authorities have stepped up operations along major routes, including the N1, N11, R101, R81, R71, R579, R37, R36, R40, R528, R574, R516, R521, D4040, D19, R524 and R523.
“These operations will ensure smooth traffic flow while prioritising the safety of all road users,” the department said.
Zero Tolerance for Reckless Behaviour and Crash Risks
Law enforcement officers will take a strict approach against speeding, overloading, drunk driving, and unroadworthy vehicles.
The department also reminded motorists to wear seatbelts, avoid distractions such as mobile phones, and get adequate rest to prevent fatigue.
Mathye stressed that responsible driving remains key to saving lives.
“We must prevent unnecessary crashes and ensure that everyone reaches their destinations safely,” she said.
